BTCV, the UK’s largest conservation charity, offers training and volunteering opportunities across the country. Croydon Council provides the core funding for BTCV to run the ACE (Action for Croydon’s Environment) Team of volunteers, which go out every Wednesday and Thursday to carry out a large variety of conservation projects ranging from hedgelaying and coppicing to charcoal burning. BTCV also offers Volunteer Officer positions and NVQ training to gain valuable work experience for future employment in the environmental sector.

Croydon Conservation Volunteers

The group meets on different Sundays each month to work on various sites in Croydon, mostly on City of London sites. They carry out a wide variety of work, ranging from woodland work, bog garden management, hedge laying, access work, to improving chalk grassland and heathland sites.

Foxley Wood and Sherwood Oaks Field Local Nature Reserve are within reach of Purley and Kenley railway stations. Bus 434 passes near it on Monday to Saturday and 407 (alight at Purley or Kenley) all week. The Friends Group manages the woodland (ancient and secondary) and field in partnership with Croydon Council and meets every 2nd Sunday to carry out nature conservation work. There is a nature trail and a guide and information booklet for this is available.

The Group meets every Tuesday morning to look after the 65 hectares of ancient oak woodland, known for its splendid bluebell display. Much work has been done to eradicate invasive species such as laurel and they have reintroduced a coppice programme for hazel. The group organises guided walks and talks for the public, carries out wildlife surveys and maintains a Nature Trail.

The group wrote the management plan for the site and implements it through their active volunteer group, which meets every Tuesday morning and every 2 nd Sunday of each month. Work ranges from coppicing, path restoration, eradicating invasive species to reinstating an old pond.
Friends of Spring Park Wood

A small, 7 acre, remnant of the once huge Spring Park Wood is hidden between houses. The Friends group is carrying out practical woodland management, using traditional skills like coppicing, layering and snedding to bring back the health and biodiversity of this oasis.

The Group looks after Beulah Hill Pond, a small, secluded area next to a busy road. The pond is closed to the public but the team of volunteers meet every Saturday morning to maintain the site and improve it for wildlife.
